Broken Hill, featured in “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” … well worth seeing!
There are very few phone/wifi towers across the Nullarbor, only one phone company has partial coverage and that’s not mine! So no radio and my friends who were also on the same road, at a different time, were concerned I had no entertainment or communication … for me this was sheer bliss. We met for morning tea on the road one day … what a circus. I’d taken great care to get my times right as there was a 2 hour time difference between us. So I arrived ten minutes early … they’d been waiting for hours. They didn’t do their maths so well.
Where does my brain go with all that spacious wonder .. meditation or composing silly ditties. When I drove endless miles in the outback for work I had to compose court reports … my secretaries got used to fading out the tarmac noise in order to type them up.
Here is a taste of one … just for fun!
red river gums
are really rather funny
red river gums
have no need for money
red river gums
are full of honey
red river gums
are lively and sunny
red river gums
play with bird and bunny
red river gums
like eating plums
red river gums
don’t beg for our crumbs
red river gums
lift us out of the glums
red river gums
are good at doing sums
red river gums
gobble fresh cinnamon buns
must admit I did miss them, my local cinnamon buns!

Wonderful photos, for me in Costa Rica, they look like an alternative planet…:) Enjoyed your traveling ditties too:)

ha I love travel anyway it comes Sadje … as my 3 preferred modes of transport faltered I just got in my car and went. Tiny but economical, had not planned any long trips in it or I would have got something I could stretch out in 🙂

Thank you so much for sharing your travel journal and showing your beautiful country. I am enjoying the “real” picture of the country. I feel embarrassed about my knowledge of your country. The desert, the camel, an endless list.

camels with their Afghan handlers were imported for exploration and transportation in the 1840’s. They thrived in our outback deserts and now run wild …

We did a drive by in Broken Hill, camped at a roadside truck stop. Surprisingly quiet, a truck driver came over for a chat and shared a beer. I remember the sky was an amazing cobalt blue. And the gum trees, surviving everywhere, a perfect haven for bird life. Your poem really caught their gentle majesty

Your post enchanted me ; I was in Nularbor ( I like this name : non arbres in French/latin) enjoying the big Red river gums and eating with delight the cinamon rolls ( I discover they are sold in Paris !!!! . Well, you make me dream , Kate and your poem was in harmony.

No, they do appear to be quite slow, which is why I chose to use the word ‘rotate’ rather than ‘spin’ which I wrote first. It’s so good that the alternative energies are being embraced. It’s a start – so much more to be done.
