possible?

People are resilient but wanton damage wreaks havoc. Can humankind correct itself, stop rape, DV, murder, paedophilia, war and environmental carnage. We know better but most seem oblivious to the long-term effects wrought. Hope and kindness I prefer keeping in mind.

Even the possibility that existence has its own reason for being evades as many struggle with the basics of ethics and finding their real purpose. But there is no excuse for the pollutions we perpetrate.

I pray the vulnerable step up and lead the way for white men are grossly corrupted by their privileged entitlements! Those who’ve suffered most have the solutions but would power also turn them sour …

I dread that they might fall into a similar trap as power seems to breed arrogance and disregard when respect and kindness would remedy such moral blindness. Know of a more effective solution?

You wove the line into pure, relatable truth, Kate.

    I am wow’d.

  2. The key word is, I think, ‘accountability’.

I’m reminded of a short story I read many years ago, in which a visitor to a foreign planet is persuaded to accept the presidency. Noticing the voting booths on every corner, he recognises that this planet has a high regard for the democratic process. He accepts the honour, and then just as his predecessor is about to hand over the ceremonial neck ornament that signifies the office, it explodes, showering bits of failed official everywhere. It turns out that the ‘voting booths’ are used to record dissatisfaction….

Perhaps we need something like that?

    • not sure exploding ornaments would help, I think our dissatisfaction is beyond doubt … accountability, transparency are crucial to the process … how do we install them?

  3. I find this to be very thought provoking , especially how you brought into light that power does breeds arrogance , by talking about it maybe we can bring a change in the vulnerable who do decide to speak up and come to power

  4. It’s a difficult problem, isn’t it, but these are the changes we need to make. How do we find a global solutions for the global problems we face? Certainly not by continuing the status quo!

I’m reading ‘There is no Planet B’ which makes the radical suggestion that as a species we need to grow up and stop being so selfish!

    • 😬 I don’t think I can do that all on my own. I’m reading ‘There is no Planet B’ which makes the radical suggestion that as a species we need to grow up and stop being so selfish!

  5. I think we must all share in the responsibility to set things right. I always and continue to teach my grands loving kindness. To be responsible for themselves and to care deeply for all things.

  6. I like your passionate response to the prompt. I admire the way you divided the prompt line; the second part, in particular, works very well. I think you are right about power. It tends to corrupt, regardless of race or gender.

  7. This is incredibly potent! It breaks my heart to see and hear about “rape, DV, murder, paedophilia, war and environmental carnage,”.. if only mankind would pay heed to finding solutions and putting an end to the horror.

  8. So much food for thought here… I always think that the most compassionate and kind people that we would like to see run governments are not those that seek the power. But it’s possible!

  9. Possibility!
I wonder quite a lot about what could have been and what should have been, in terms of humanity.
Like, we could have been living on other planets of the solar system or we should have not created nuclear weapons.
The balance in the equation for our prosperity lies in the understanding of our collective values as a single unit.
As long as equation is favoring one side, the prosperity will be a myth.

    • wisely said Hammad, but those with the prosperity and power would never loosen their grip. They expect others to grovel at their feet and have no idea how to share … 😦

  10. Powerful, poignant truth, SweetKate!
We must all stand up, speak out, be moved to action…BE the role models, BE the positive changes we want to see…honesty and positivity can be contagious.

  11. “I prefer keeping in mind even the possibility that existence has its own reason for being,” said Wisława Szymborska, conveniently ignoring the fact that such a notion is nonsensical. Did she say it in English? Something may have been lost in translation. Maybe she meant it as a joke. When it comes to translation, jokes are the first things to go. But I am thinking that she was being sincere. I think she was trying to provide us with a little present that might lighten up our day. A gift that might allow us to ignore all the horror that surrounds us. It was a gift that was never supposed to be unwrapped…..
Existence doesn’t need reason. Only humans need reason, and only humans resist the notion that there will always be, at the end of the day, no reason at all.
    But thanks Wiskawa.

  12. I don’t know if there is an answer to human corruption, Kate. I believe individuals can be pure in heart and work toward a better world. I believe like-minded individuals can work together, can vote for better leaders, can put pressure on elected officials. But I think it will be an ongoing battle, not a permanent solution.

  13. I think our possibilities are endless as we were gifted with so many capabilities and qualities needed for change. It is or was up to us as a unit to evolve or fall apart. Thought-provoking piece!

  14. Hope is there I agree. But seriously if we keep the factor of Time in consideration then things are out of hand for the people present on Earth who actually are concerned about these issues. And if the percentage of people like you increases we are saved. I agree with the comment above me of Mish. If we believe and work towards it, we can. 🙂
