I rearrange the words
questioning thoughts and ideals
trying to expand your mind
challenge your conceptual bind
healthier to challenge our complacency
our apathy and our unprocessed values
It’s too easy to drift through life
without assessing our goals
ever pondered your life’s purpose
dared to follow your dreams or passion
healthier to challenge our complacency
our apathy and our unprocessed values
Have you paused to work it all out
wonder why we’re here, what’s it about
what do you really want to achieve
how do you measure personal success
healthier to challenge our complacency
our apathy and our unprocessed values
Have you thought long and hard
about how you treat others
yourself and our environment
how you deal with pain or conflict
healthier to challenge our complacency
our apathy and our unprocessed values
Do you support worthy causes
or help bankroll a mate
or hoarding it all unaware of fate
poisoned inside from vilified hate
healthier to challenge our complacency
our apathy and our unprocessed values
Can you readily adapt to life’s changes
embrace diversity explore new things
alienate others or stuck in routine
are you gentle and kind or violent
healthier to challenge our complacency
our apathy and our unprocessed values
Do you manipulate, have anger, envy
and jealousy. Are you insecure or
nobody’s fool. Do you tend to help
or hinder, a healer or a drug dealer
healthier to challenge our complacency
our apathy and our unprocessed values

Complacency should always be challenged, in my opinion. That’s how we grow and move forward. Loved this poem, Kate!

Great write. Apathy and complacency are the enemy.

People are so many things, whether it’s a trait of out modern societies or whatever I feel people are looking too inwardly to justify themselves rather than seeing how their actions affect others. But maybe it’s just me…

making excuses is not accepting responsibility … we need to be aware of our impact on all those around us, it has ripple effect.

It does. Even if you don’t see it.

YES!!! ‘Tis much healthier to challenge those things! Thank you for reminding us and challenging us! And for, once again, putting wisdom, good advice, and encouragement in your poems!
HUGS!!! 🙂
PS…I just thought of a very ancient joke:
The teacher asked the student, “Are you ignorant or apathetic?” And the kid replied, “I don’t know and I don’t care.” 😉 😛 That joke rattlin’ around in my brain has always made smile and strive to be aware, a good listener, willing to learn AND compassionate, interested, and responsive! 🙂

Kate you always write these poems so truly and inspiring one and all. I too agree challenges have to be taken in their right spirit and yes in our world today it is most required. Every part of the world the society is changing and let us see where we can fit with our goodness.

Thanks for explaining the “unprocessed values” here in the comment box..i was about to ask..
As for the challenges we need to take…i am on it Kate; there is just so much trouble with our society today…i just can understand where all the hates are coming from..especially back home…election is fast approaching and i can only imagine how “dirty” our political system is: an opponent deliberately murders another; black propaganda is rampant…and my list could go on…and my oh my..i wonder whats in store for us

wow at least we don’t kill each other here but there are erroneous attacks on their dead mothers, claims they will pass damaging legislation when they clearly said they wont … it’s too gross! No idea how we stooped so low 😦

unprocessed values, not sure i understand that completely but it makes me ponder a while, what may be good for me may not be easy for others to emulate, good thoughts here Kate, somethings to read again and chew on

‘unprocessed values’ refers to those we absorb by osmosis from family, culture, religion without really thinking them through more logically … thanks Gina!

ah thank you for clarifying that, makes a lot of sense to me. Am reading part 2 of books by a Malaysian author I have just discovered and she writes something along these lines, generational legacy and knowing when the old ways need some reinvention to be relevant.

beautiful way of restating it, glad it’s in the comments here thanks Gina!
We need to stay relevant and responsible, not drift along mindlessly 🙂

We all need to challenge ourselves in ways that stretch and expand our vision of our world. Exploration is a very appropriate title.
