The Samba Blisstas playing at the Channon Markets, NSW
Look at their animation, energy and joy … it was the end of a long day at the markets and I had been keen to go but my friend insisted we stay to hear them.
Now I know why, the beat, the rhythm the energy was just electrifying!

It’s a wonderful shot Kate. I like the playfulness of participants. Have I seen this shot before?

I was at the Dubbo golf club. I was chasing a girl who worked there (a hippie that I may have mentioned to you, Kate) and she had arranged for a few of her friends to play for the small assembly of tired golfers, curious visitors and the usual drunks. She had even given the band a name.
I was not expecting much.
They started fiddling about …. a few bits and pieces of vaguely familiar tunes …. a warm up.
And then the singer strolled on. I was paying so little attention that I saw a blonde girl with long hair and jeans. It turned out that it wasn’t a girl at all, but a boy (man?) standing maybe 6’3”.
And then they started playing.
What can I say? You had to be there.

Cold Chisel played an un-announced gig at a Dubbo pub in the 90s before they released Last Wave of Summer! For a moment I thought you were going to refer to them! Jimmy wasn’t that tall!

No …. it was actually Dave Mason from (what would become) the Reels. And it was the 70’s.
That said I think Dubbo were a lot more ready for Jimmy Barnes than they were for Dave Mason.

Yes, I’d forgotten about the Reels. Was Dubbo ever ready for them? I’m even surprised you mentioned someone who worked there was a hippy! Difference wasn’t (and still isn’t ) celebrated a great deal in Dubbo!!

Dave’s Dad was the local member and would soon become the leader of the opposition in NSW. So Dubbo should have been ready for them. And it’s amazing what you stumble across when you scratch the surface. But who could forget (well …. most people probably) Dubbo a Go Go? ‘You call it very saleable, I call it social dysentery ….’

The Samba Blistas! The Channon markets! Such memories you bring back! I lived in Bangalow 10 years ago and the Samba Blistas used to play in all the street festivals. Everyone loved them. You’re right, great energy, stirring, passionate, and the Channon Markets were the best – Bangalow markets a close second!

indeed Jim, our paths have crossed at different times! That was actually the 40th anniversary of the Channon Markets, the Samba Blista guy died so they have had to reform under another name …

Wonderful fun! They look like they have pep and joy and make superb music! 🙂
I love music! Especially outdoors! 🙂 I’ve been fortunate to see some famous musicians and bands/groups play…and I’ve really enjoyed school bands and orchestras and choirs, etc…and music in parades, etc…I even enjoy operas…but, I think my VERY favorite is to hear local singers and singing groups who share their music in our parks, pubs, and on the patios of restaurants. I love supporting the local musicians here.
HUGS!!! 🙂

I still remember the day when I first time saw a Turkish band performing in my city . They were amazing . A different type of music it was . The rhythm of their music took me in another world I mean I found myself lost . It was so beautiful you would like to enjoy it again .

On my forays out into the wilds I come across, find, see, and on one occasion heard someone playing the melody of green sleeves on a guitar. I was in amongst some sand dunes seeking out macro wildlife, when I become aware of the music. I made my way toward it and, without being seen myself I saw a young lady, not only was she playing the guitar she was sobbing, and fearing I’d scare her I turned and went back the way I had come. Not to far away, just far enough so I could still hear the music, for she played really well, and was still playing when I decided to move on. Who she was, and why she was crying I will never know, but every time I venture into that area again the memory returns, and one occasion I started to whistle the tune, perhaps in the hope that she might be around and on hearing it approach me, day dreaming again, but I have to say it was a musical moment that has stayed with me for over twenty years, she really could play!
