The Christians who lived in these ‘fairy’ chimneys made them their homes and Churches in Goreme Valley, Turkey in order to escape persecution … they had to be very tenacious to survive. Thought to be first inhabited in about 1800 to 1200 BC so they probably did not carve them out. But the murals that they did paint were magnificent, sadly all the eyes have been gouged.
